Every graphic designer would say without hesitation that Photoshop, which has been developed by Adobe for several years, is an indispensable tool in their daily work. However, the main drawback of the program is the monthly fee, which is useless for those who use the program only occasionally.

The original Adobe Photoshop (hereinafter referred to as Adobe PS) program does not have a free version - there is only the opportunity to try the program for 30 days. Fortunately, there are many free alternatives on the Internet, suitable for both novice entrepreneurs who need to perform minor photo retouching or correction work, and novice graphic designers. In this blog post, we present the most popular and best-reviewed photo editing programs and websites.

1. PIXLR

This program is suitable for those who do not want to load their computer with software - photo editing is enabled on the website. PIXLR provides basic photo editing tools, as well as the ability to create vignettes and collages.

Advantages. The program is extremely easy to use, so if you want to brighten a dark photo, adjust the color balance, and add minimal effects to your photo, PIXLR will allow you to do it in just a few minutes. The program also works great on various smart devices. The range of effects and functions provided can be expanded for an annual fee of 15 US dollars (approximately 13 euros).

Disadvantages. The website requires a good internet connection for smooth and high-quality photo editing. The program also lacks frequently needed tools, such as layers.

2. Photopea

This is another program that does not need to be installed on your computer - everything is available online. Photopea is perfect for those who are not satisfied with the playful effects of PIXLR. In terms of tools, this site is very similar to Adobe PS. The program is also able to open working files from other programs.

Advantages. The program management and tool layout are very reminiscent of PS, so if you have already had to delve into the subtleties of this program, Photopea tools will be familiar. The program can also work with both vector and raster elements.

Disadvantages. Since the program is free, there are a lot of ads. To remove them and work in peace, you have to pay a monthly fee. Also, the program, like PIXLR, requires a strong Internet connection.

3. GIMP

The GNU Image Manipulation Program (abbreviated and better known as GIMP) is an open source toolkit that you can install on your computer with a few clicks. You don't have to pay for the software, but it is very important to note that with your consent, the software will automatically update itself.

Advantages. Many GIMP users claim that this program is most similar to Adobe PS in terms of its range of tools. Also, even if you receive a working file from the latter program, you can easily open and edit it in the GIMP system.

Disadvantages. Those who respond to the program note that GIMP is not suitable for novice users - in order to make the most of the tools and their capabilities, you must have accumulated sufficient skills. You may also have to search for and download additional program plugins in order to meet all user expectations.

4. Photo Pos Pro

Photo Pos Pro is a free photo editing software that can do everything from photo retouching to collages and business cards. You can also use this program to edit existing photos or artwork, or start from scratch.

Advantages. This program is perfect for beginners, as it comes in two versions – Novice and Expert. It can also process .RAW files.

Disadvantages. To use all the features of the software, you will have to purchase the Premium version for $30 (~26.30 euros). Also, if you choose the easier-to-use Beginner version, you will not be able to use some features (such as layers).

5. Darktable

Often positioned as an alternative to Adobe Lightroom, Darktable offers excellent photo editing and retouching capabilities that even novice graphic enthusiasts can easily use. The program also has the ability to save photo editing settings, so if you want to give multiple photos the same color effect, after editing one photo, you can apply the corrections to others with the click of a button.

Advantages. Darktable offers a simple interface that allows users to correct colors, apply filters, and adjust brightness and contrast. The program management is almost identical to Adobe Lightroom. Also, while many photo editing programs are only available to Mac and Windows operating system users, Darktable can also be used by Linux users.

Disadvantages. For professional photographers and experienced graphic designers, Darktable cannot offer all the necessary features. The system also tends to crash when trying to edit higher resolution files.
